Director of Warren County Freeholders Was Candidate for Fifth Term on Board
Warren County Freeholder Director John A. Pfeffer Jr., 50 of 46 Bullman St., Phillipsburg, died at about 11 a.m. today I the New Jersey Sanatorium for chest Diseases at Mt. Kipp, near Glen Gardner. He had been a patient in the sanatorium since last Tuesday.

When he entered the sanatorium he told the freeholder’s office he was going for “a checkup and a complete rest.”

Mr. Pfeffer was elected to his first three-year term on the freeholders board in 1956. He was re-elected in 1959, 1962, 9965. He was the Republican candidate for election in this fifth term in the general election next Nov. 5.

Born in Easton, on April 18, 1918, Mr. Pfeffer was graduated from Easton High School in 1934. He entered the employ of Ridgway & Pfeffer, Inc., a Phillipsburg automobile agency, in 1925 and subsequently served as present until the firm was sold to Karen Chevrolet in 1964. He served later as vice-president of the company and subsequently has been a company salesman. He had lived in Phillipsburg since 1942.

Mr. Pfeffer was honored by the Warren County Republican Committee at a testimonial dinner attended by 500 persons in 1959. He was cited as ‘one of the young, strong, freemen to whom we all look for leadership.” When the Republicans took control of the county Board of Freeholds last January, Mr. Peffer was elected director. The directorship traditionally goes to the senior majority party member of the board.

At the time of his death he was a member of the Warren County Mental health Board, the county Welfare board, the county Regional Planning Board and the Vocational Board of School Estimate. He also had served as a member of the board of directors of the Lehigh Valley Social Service Exchange and the Warren County Guidance Center.

Mr. Pfeffer was a past president of the Warren County Automotive Trade Association and a Warren County trustee of the New Jersey State Automotive Trade Association.

A charter member of the Phillipsburg Exchange Club, he was a past president of the organization. He served as treasurer of the Joseph H. Firth Youth Center in Phillipsburg.

Active in the Boy Scout Movement since he entered Troop 52 as a tenderfoot in 1932, Mr. Pfeffer served as troop scoutmaster for 10 years and was active in Delaware Valley Boy Scout Council activities. He received the Silver beaver award, one of the highest Scout awards for adults, in 1957.

Mr. Pfeffer was a member of Westminster, Presbyterian Church. He served as a member of the board of trustees for several years.

An ardent sportsman, he was a member of Warren County Red and Gun Club, unit 1 and served on its board of governors. He was a founder of the Penn jersey Rifle League and was a member of the Musconetcong Bowmen, and Phillipsburg Elks Lodge and the Phillipsburg Quarterback Club.

Mr. Pfeffer was a son of Mrs. Edith W. Peffer, of Phillipsburg and the late John A. Pfeffer.

Survivors include his widow, the former Magdalene J. Seip, two sons, John A. III of Reading, and **** of Easton; a daughter, *****, of Flemington, two brothers, Lester E. and Kenneth W., both of Phillipsburg; a sister, ***** of Coatesville and three grandchildren.
