M. J. Stocker, 92, Spanish War Vet, Was Stonemason
Monroe Jackson Stocker, a Spanish-American War Veteran who
was one of Easton's oldest residents, died last night at his
home, 837 Packer Street. He would have been 93 years old on
Friday.
Mr. Stocker a retired stonemason, service in Puerto Rico from
1898 to 1899 with the First United States Volunteer Engineers
during the war with Spain. In World War I, at the age of 59,
he was a guard and operated a searchlight at the Dupont powder
plant at Carneys Point, NJ directly across the Delaware River
from Wilmington, Del.
Born in Williams Township, Mr. Stocker was the son of the
late James and Catharine King Stocker. Before becoming a stonemason,
he was employed by the Edison Cement Co and later by the Easton
School District. He retired in 1928. He and his wife, the former
Mary Silvanah Brotzman, would have observed their diamond wedding
anniversary this month. They were married April 15, 1876.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church (South Side),
a charter member of Lieut. Elbert Curtis Baker Post 1290, Veterans
of Foreign Wars and also Wyckoff Camp 43, United Spanish War
Veterans.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters,
Mrs. Myra VanSyckle, of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Viola Terhune,
of Fair Lawn, NJ; two sons, James Edward Stocker of Easton
and Jackson Stocker, at home; seven grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren. |
