George W. Stone, Retired Funeral Director, Dies.
George Weller Stoner, 86, a retired funeral director, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Saturday at 5 P.m. at his home in Stewartsville.
He became a funeral director as a young man and worked for a time with his father, the late John S. Stone, who operated a funeral home in Stewartsville. He later went to New York City where he worked most of his career for the Campbell Funeral Home.
Mr. Stone was one of the original members who helped to organize the New Jersey Funeral Directors Association. His name appears as a charter member on the charter which hands in the State House at Trenton.
Born in Stewartsville on July 17 1869, he was a son of the late John S. and Lavinia Stone. Member of Mr. Stone’s family have been funeral directors for more than 150 years.
He was a member of the Stewartsville Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Senior Christian Endeavor Society of the church.
His wife the former Persis Shipman, died before him.
Surviving are two sisters, Miss Tillie Stone, of Stewartsville, and Mrs. Mary Fox, of Lykens, Pa., and a brother, Frank Stone, who operated the Stone Funeral Home at Stewartsville.
