Warren M. Uhler, County Garage man, Killed Instantly

Nazareth Resident’s Car Runs into Freight Train at Crossing

Warren Madison Uhler, 45, years old, of Main and High streets, Nazareth, who operated the garage for caring for the automobiles owned by Northampton county, in this city was instantly killed between 10:30 and 11 o’clock last night, when he drove a county-owned automobile into a freight train on the Lehigh and New England Railroad, between Tatamy and Nazareth.

No explanation of the accident could be learned but it is believed that Mr. Uhler, exhausted from a long day of work, may have fallen asleep or was so tired that he was incapable of carefully observing the roadway ahead of him.

Failed to See Train

He had worked hard all day at the garage and in the evening he went to Uhler’s Hotel to repair an electrical pump. He and other members of his family own the hotel property. He had left the hotel, and was driving west, toward Nazareth, and failed to see the thirty-four-car fright training moving over the grade crossing west of J. H. Fulmer’s fam. The automobile crashed into the sixteenth freight car from the end of the train, which had an engine pulling it and another pushing.

The automobile was a complete wreck and Mr. Uhler’s injuries about the head, body and legs, were so severe that it was apparent he had died instantly.

Dr. W. Calvin Nickel, of Nazareth was summoned and conducted an investigation. He announced this morning that he would issue a certificate of accidental death.

Was fine Mechanic

Mr. Uhler, member of an old and prominent Northampton county family, was Widely known in Nazareth and Easton. he was regarded as an unusually fine automobile mechanic and was place in charge of the county’s garage between five and six years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace Uhler; four children, Donald with the United Stated Navy, Stationed at Panama Canal Zone, and Millicent, Margaret, and Mary, at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Madison Uhler, of Nazareth; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Stettler, and Mrs. Kathryn Chapman, both of Nazareth, and brother, Clayton Uhler of Easton.

Funeral services will be held at the home on Friday at 3 P.m. in charge of the Rev. H. C. Snyder pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Nazareth, and interment will made in Greenwood Cemetery, Nazareth.
