MAN AND TWO WOMEN ROASTED TO A CRISP The Fire Started From Careless Use ot Matches. A FAYETTE TRAGEDY Mrs. George Zartman's House De stroyed, and She, Her Daughter and the Hired Man Burned to Death Yesterday Seneca. A horrible tragedy occurred two miles directly south of Waterloo, in the town of Fayette, yesterday morning at 3 o'clock. The brick residence of Mrs. George Zartman was destroyed by fire, and she and her daughter, Mrs. Warren Poffenberger, and the hired man, Christopher Seward, perished in the flames.

It seems that the man, Seward, went home at a late hour, having ridden in a buggy with Daniel Patterson, a neighbor. It is conjectured that he lighted matches and thoughtlessly threw one down, which ignited some combustible material. The first that was known of the fire, Mr. Pof fenberger, who slept upstairs, was awakened by the smoke. He arose in a dazed condition and escaped through a window, clambering down from the piazza roof. He rushed to the bedroom window, where his wife and mother-in-law were sleeping, and tore open the window blinds in a vain attempt to save them. He was driven back by the fierce tongues of flame which leaped forth from the window. He then shouted for help, but the neighbors arrived too late to save either life cr property, the house and its contents being entirely destroyed. As soon as possible, the work of searching the ruins for the bodies was begun.

The remains of Mrs. Zartman and her daughter were finally discovered roasted to a crisp, the heads, arms and limbs being entirely consumed consumed by the flames. The body of the hired man was not found for some time afterward, but when reached and brought out, it was in the same shape. Nothing remained but the trunk and upper portion of the lower limbs. The brick walls of the house formed a furnace in which the three victims were roasted. It is safe to presume that they were at first suffocated by the smoke, and did not suffer much from fire. A nurse, who had been stay-in: stay-in: stay-in: with the family, was away on a few- few- days vacation. Mrs. Zartman, who was 74 years of age, was in a helpless condition frcm paralysis. Mrs. Foffenberger was 40 years of age, and is survived by her husband. husband. The elder victim leaves three sons, the Rev. Joseph II. Zartman, of Onondaga Onondaga county; Charles E. and George E. Zartman, of Waterloo, and one daughter, the wife of the Rev. John Yost, of Dakota. The bodies were conveyed to Genung &; Son's undertaking rooms at 10 o'clock, yesterday yesterday morning, to be prepared for burial. Throughout the day yesterday crowds of people visited the scene of the catastrophe to satisfy their curiosity. .Many also walked several miles to view ruins- , . This calamity recalls the Logan holocaust at Waterloo, in 1885, when James Logan perished in his burning house with his wife and young son and daughter.
