Miss Lillian M. Houser, P'burg Educator 43 Years
Miss Lililan M. Mouser, 83, educator for 43 years who was assistant
to the superintendent of schools in Philiipsburg under seven
chief executives and twice acting superintendent, died last
night in Warren Hospital where she was admitted Dec. 12 She
lived at 489 Corliss Ave., Phillipsburg.
In 1975 she was the third recipient of the "Friend of
Education" Award of the Phillipsburg Education Association
for outstanding contributions to theeducation of the community's
children. In 35 years as assistant to the superintendents,
she was in charge of elementary schools.
The Phillipsburg Midd school is titled that name but in 1973
at it's opening, it was dediated to Miss Houser for her outstanding
contributions to pupils.
During her career in Phillipsburg, she organized and equipped
kindergartens in the school system, instituted school libraries,
introduced reading readiness programs and was responsible for
many other advancesin the elementar schools. She retired in
1956.
In 1958 she was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the
Phillipsburg Chambe of Commerce. Two years earlier she was
honored by the Phillisburg Central Council of Parents and Teachers.
She also was lauded at a special function by the Phillipsburg
Education Association.
In 1911 graduate of Phillipsburg High School, she was graduated
from State Normal School, trenton, two years later and received
a bachelor of science dgreee from New York University in 1928
and a master of arts degree from that university in 1934. She
took extension courses later at Lafayett Collete, Lehigh University
and Rutgers University.
From 1913 to the fall of 1916, she taught in the Springtown,
N.J., school and then because a teacher in the Freeman School,
Phillipsburg for tw years before being an unassigned teacher
fo three years in Phillipsburg. She was named assistant to
the superintendent in 1921, serving to that capacity for 35
years until her retirement.
Born in Phillipsburg on July 26, 1894, she was a daughter
of the late John H. and Anna Weaver Houser. Her father was
a former assessor and commissioner of Phillispburg.
Miss Houser was a member of the first Delegate assemby of
the N.J. Education Association. She was active in the Red Cross
in Phillipsburg, Warren County Health Association, Easton Soroptismist
Club, Phillipsburg Business and Professional Women's Club and
the american Association of University Women.
After retirement, she did private tutoring in her home.
She lived in Phillipsburg all her life and was a member of
St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Phillipsburg.
There are no immediate survivors.
Services will beheld at 1:30 p.. Saturday in the Rupell Funeral
Home. Phillipsburg Interment will be in Easton Cemetery. |
