John W. Purdy Jr., Elks Lodge Leader, Stricken at parade
John W. Purdy Jr., 60, of 38 Hunt Ave., Pohatcong Township,
died Sunday at Warren Hospital after being stricken while watching
the Halloween parade in Phillipsburg.
He was an insurance claims adjuster until retiring in 1980,
before that, he owned and operated Purdy’s Sweet Shop,
Phillipsburg from 1949 to 1958.
Born Feb 24, 1924, in Easton and was a son of the late John
W. Sr. and Mamie Daubert Purdy.
Mr. Purdy, a 1942 graduate of Phillipsburg High School was
a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, and a
past president of the Huntington Volunteer Fire Co. He served
with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
A past exalted ruler and former trustee of Phillipsburg Elks
Lodge 395, he was past vice president and a past district deputy
grand exalted ruler of Elks West Central District, and a past
state president of the New Jersey State Elks Association. In
1968, he received an honorary life membership in the Past Exulted
Rulers of Phillipsburg lodge.
Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Pursel; three
daughters, two sisters, Jane
Sinko and *****, both of Phillipsburg; his stepmother,
Mrs. Oliver Purdy, Easton, and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, Interment
will be in Greenwich Cemetery. Bethlehem Lodge will hold Masonic
services at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Rupell Funeral home, Phillipsburg. |
