William F. Riley, 61, of 621 Lynda Road, Rose Hill Heights, Lopatcong
Township, died Wednesday in Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia,
where he was a patient for five weeks. He was taken ill in September.
He was an account manager for Oscar Mayer Co., Leonia, N.J., last
working in September after 30 years of service to the company. He handled
the northeastern section of the country.
Born in Easton, on Aug. 19, 1918, he was a son of Mrs. Ruth Conine
Riley, Easton, and the late Roy Riley. He lived in Lopatcong Township
for the last 23 years.
He was an Easton area baseball player, manager, umpire and basketball
official. He officiated basketball and baseball for over 20 years.
A Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association official, he helped
form the first PIAA baseball officials' chapter in Easton and served
as secretary-treasurer for 17 years. He was secretary of the PIAA-IABO
basketball chapter, which honored him in the spring of 1977 for his
years of service and encouragement to younger officials.
He played center field for three years at Easton High School, from
which he graduated in 1936. He played several seasons with the area's
Atlantic Refinery baseball team. He later managed the Easton Fleas
Club in the Tri-County League. Upon returning from military service,
he got interested in softball and helped pioneer the game into a popular
sport.
He umpired area college baseball games, working at Lafayette, Lehigh,
Muhlenberg, Moravian., Kutztown and East Stroudsburg. He served on
Ada Bushnell's baseball and basketball roster.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Upon graduation
from Churchman Business College, he became an accountant with Radiant
Heat, Inc., Easton. After two years with Radiant Heat, he joined Oscar
Mayer Co., Philadelphia.
He was president of the Oak Hill Golf Club, Riegel Ridge, in 1974,
and served on its board of directors for three years.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Easton; a life member
of the Order of Fleas, Easton; past president of the West Washington
Marketing and Management Association, and a member of the Phillipsburg
Elks Lodge No. 395.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Snyder; a brother, Kenneth
of Washington; two sisters.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Rupell Funeral Home,
Phillipsburg. Interment will be in Greenwich Presbyterian Cemetery. |
