Herbert D. Snyder, former register of wills, dies at 70
Widely known resident of Easton passes away unexpectedly at hospital in Philadelphia
Herbert DeWillis Snyder, 70 former register of wills of Northampton County, and one of the most widely known residence of the county died unexpectedly at 130 o’clock this morning at the University Hospital, Philadelphia.

Mr. Snyder was admitted to Easton Hospital for treatment on Easter day. He remained their 12 days and was then moved to the University Hospital, where his condition of appeared to be rapidly improving. However, early this morning and embolism causes sudden death.

Mr. Snyder was born at Martin’s Creek, Lower Mount Bethel Township, on August 20th, 1864, a son of the late Josiah C M. and Louisal Snyder. He received his early education in the schools of his home community, and later attended Easton Business College. He then went to West Chester State Normal School and was graduated from a year in 1882.

He immediately started to teach school at Martin’s Creek, and continued in his work, with a few brief interruptions, until 1912. During this period he was also engaged in other occupations. While a schoolteacher and later principle, he gave the name to the Centerfield school which it’s still bears. He taught not only in the Independent District of Martin’s Creek but also its other schools in Lower Mount Bethel Township.

From 1889 to 1895 he was engaged in the store business with his brother, Charles N. Snyder, at Martin’s Creek, continuing his school teaching during that period. In 1896 he entered Lafayette College, attending their one year as a member of the class of 1900 he then resumed his teaching. For a time he was also engaged in the undertaking business in Martin’s Creek.
In 1904 he was elected a Justice of the Peace and retained that office until 1924, when he moved to Easton and made his home at 315 High street, where you resided at the time of his death.

In 1911 he was the democratic candidate for the office and Clerk of Orphans Court of Northampton County, but was defeated for the office by a margin of two votes. When EC Yeager took office has Recorder of Deeds on January 1, 1912, he appointed Mr. Snyder as is deputy and Mr. Snyder remained in this position for six years.

During his term is deputy recorder of deeds, he was once an unsuccessful candidate for Registers of Wills, but at the next election in 19170, he was successful in his candidacy and was re-elected three times, relinquishing the position on December 31, 1933, after service of 16 years and that calls.

Since his retirement from political office, he had been engaged in business in Easton, principally as a mortgage investigator.

Mr. Snyder was regarded as one of the leaders of the Democratic Party. He was a clean political worker, a kindly and affable gentleman and a few men would boast of as many firm Frances he had made during this period of service in the community. Throughout the Mount Bethel District especially, he was looked upon as an adviser and trusted friend and for many years was familiarly known as squire Snyder.

Mr. Snyder was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran church, Martin’s Creek. For a number of years he served as secretary of that congregation and was formally superintendent of the Sunday school. He was also a member of the Martin’s Creek lodge, number 745, IO OF.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sally E. Snyder; a son, George E. Snyder, at home, two brothers, Charles and Snyder, and Elmer E. Snyder, both of Easton, and a sister, Mrs. Thomas O. Werner, of Bangor.
