Charles Steckel, Ex-Sand Firm President, Dies
Operated Business With Brother more Than 50 years
Charles C. Steckel, 86, retired president of the Steckel Sand and Gravel Co., Phillipsburg, died yesterday morning at this home at 34 Cattell St., Easton. He had been ill for the last year.

Mr. Steckel and his brother, Walter L. Steckel who died in 1953, operated the sand and gravel business for more than 50 years. They branched in the ready-mixed concrete business and traded under the slogan "Pioneers in Ready-Mix Concrete" which was originated by Mr. Steckel. In 1948 he sold his interests in the firm to his nephews who now conduct the business under the name Steckel Concrete Co.

The company's gravel pits, offices and concrete bulk mixing plant are along North Broad Street, Phillipsburg. The firm at on time maintained business offices on Bushkill Drive, Easton, and in the former Easton Trust Building.

Born Aug 3, 1878, in Raubsville, Mr. Steckel was a son of the late William and Mary T. Hildenbrand Steckel.

He was a life member of Easton Elks Lodge 121, and a member of the Lymen's Home Missionary Movement, Philadelphia.

Surviving are his widow, the former Lucy Casamassa; four daughters, Miss Helen Steckel, Mrs. Mildred Lewis and Mrs. Marian Yomtob, all of Van Nuys, Calif., and Ruth, wife of Russell Reimel Easton; a son, Claude (Jimmy) Steckel, Phillipsburg, a sister, Miss Maude Steckel, Easton; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His first wife, Irene M. Day Steckel died in 1942, and a son, Willard A. Steckel, died in 1956.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Strunk Funeral Home, Easton. Memorial rites will be conducted by the Easton Elks Lodge at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
