Joseph Vogel
Joseph Vogel, of No. 627 Wilkes-Barre Street, died at noon
on Sunday, at his home, aged 75 years. Mr. Vogel had been confined
to his home for more than three months with a complication
of diseases. The immediate cause of his death was acute cardiac
disease.
Mr. Vogel was one of nine children born to the late William
Vogel and Elizabeth, his wife, of Williams Township, this county.
There were seven sons and two daughters. In early life Mr.
Vogel worked at the Stewart wire mills. About 28 years ago
he entered the employ of the Lehigh Valley Company. About a
year ago he retired.
Mr. Vogel was twice married; his first wife being Miss Amanda
Catherine Mowrey, by whom he had two sons and two daughters,
of whom only one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Herr, of the South Side,
survives him. His second wife was Miss Sarah E. Cogan, who
survives him, as well as one son by his second marriage, Warren
Vogel, of Bethlehem. Of the large family of brothers and sisters,
only one brother survives him, John Vogel, of Pittburgh, Pa.
He is also survived by two grandsons and three granddaughters.
Mr. Vogel was confimred in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, South
Side, from which church he united by letter with the South
Presbyterian Church, June 4, 1891. In 1893 he was elected as
a trustee for the full term. October 29, 1902, he was elected
an elder of the South Presbyterian Church for a term of four
years, and served continuously until the time of his death.
He was among the most faithful of the eldership and was most
closely identified with the Sunday School for the past 25 years,
serving a number of years as assistant superintendent and continuously
as a spiritual, faithful teacher. At one time he led a Bible
class of six young men of which he was the teacher, to make
a public profession of their faith in church at the same time,
the only time the Sunday School of the church has witnessed
such an event.
In the time of our late Rebellion Mr. Vogel enlisted under
his flag in defense of his country as a member of the First
Pennylvania Regiment, Company C., under Captain Armstrong,
and served three months.
