Would is Fatal To farm Employee
Officials Rule Walters Was Shot Accidentally
Claude Walters, 54 years old, who was employed on the farm of Russell Reeder, located on the Belvidere Highway, Between Rocksburg and Belvidere, died last evening in the Easton Hospital, the result of a shotgun wound he suffered shortly before noon, not far from the Reeder farm.
Officials who investigated, said the shot was fired from Alvin D. Hunt, 16 years old, of 2425 Parkswood, Palmer Township, while he and Walters were hunting rabbits.
Soon after the shooting, troopers from the Washington station of the State Police, were called. They questioned Hunt. Following the death of Walters, Northampton County officials entered into the investigation, but it was said today that no action had been taken against Hunt, the opinion being general that the shooting was accidental.
Hunt had been engaged, officials said, by Reeder to assist in the slaughter of hogs. Hunt and Walter decided to go into the field for rabbits before beginning their work, and when a rabbit appeared, Hunt fired, part of the charge entering Walter’s abdomen.
It is likely that a charge of hunting without a license may be preferred against Hunt. Prosecutor Cook of Warren County, had been called into the case.
Mr. Walters was a native of Harmony and had been in the employ of Reeder the past year. Formerly he was employed by the Vulcanite Portland Cement Company.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Wray Tomlinson, of Clinton, Iowa; a son, Edward Walters, of 934 Nesquehoning street, South Side Easton; a sister, Mrs. Daisy Smith of Easton, and two grandchildren.
