Death Claims J. S. Noble Sr.
Former City Clerk Had Been in Failing Health for Six Months
John Sanford Noble, Sr. a former City Clerk of Easton and a former member of Select Council from the Third Ward, this city, died at 2 o’clock this morning at his home, No. 279 Shawnee Avenue, College Hill, after an illness of one week of a complication of ailments. He had been in failing health for the past six months. He was in the 73rd year of his age.

Mr. Noble was born in Easton onMarch2, 1851 and was the only son of Frederick Waldo and Anna Sebring Noble, now deceased. He completed public school courses and graduated from the Easton High School in 1868. Later he entered Lafayette College as a member of the class of 1874 and completed the first year as a student in the General Scientific Course. He then withdrew from college to join an engineering corps connected with a railroad enterprise in which his father was interested at Ottawa, Illinois.

Two years were spent in the West and he then returned to Easton, after a special course at Lafayette, he engaged in the hardware business with his uncle, also John Sanford Noble. The operated under the firm name of Noble & Company for five years, then the junior partner withdrew and began the study of law. He soon gave up the law and engaged I business, opening insurance, conveyancing and brokerage offices. In 1899, he formed a partnership with Herbert T. Buckley, in the private banking form, H.T. Buckley Company. For more than40 years he was a notary public. He was an active member of the old Easton Grays: Following the death of the late Luther M. Fine, April 25, 1804, Mr. Noble was elected as city Clerk and he held this position until April 1, 1899.

Mr. Noble was one of the organizer of the Easton Board of Trade in 1882 and was the first secretary of that body, He was one of the leading factors in inducing the H. &. H. Simon Silk Mill firm to locate here. From Dec. 4, 1911 to Dec. 1, 1913, he served as a member of Select Council from the Third Ward.

For several years Mr. Noble was ticket agent for the Central Railroad I this city, After retiring as City Clerk in 1890, he engaged in the insurance, Stock Broking and notary public business, with offices in the Easton National Bank, Building. He was a most genial and obliging man and had a host of friends in this vicinity.

Deceased was a Republican in politics and for twenty-five years served as a return judge at the court house, I computing the official returns of the county. He was also on election boards in the Third Ward and took an active part in many movements for the betterment of Easton.

Mr. Noble was a member of the McKinley Club, Saranac Tribe, No. 84, I. O.R.M, and Trinity Episcopal Church, this city.

On April 18, 1883, Mr. Noble married Miss Florence Baldwin, daughter of Isaac and the late Charlotte Holland Baldwin, of Mauch Chunk. Mrs. Noble died in this city in 1908.

Mr. Noble is survived by two children, Miss Charlotte, residing at home and John Sanford Noble, Jr., now vice principal of schools of Millville, Del. He also leaves on sister, Mrs. Edith N. Hackett, widow of William Hackett, of this city
