John Brotzman probably a tailor in early life, was a business man. He w as elected Chief Burgess of Easton, with his office located in the South W est Center Square. He was elected Commissioner of Northampton County in 1 789. John Brotzman and a brother-in-law, John Herster, secured a gra nt of land from John Penn, the youngest Esq. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvan ia on which Brotzman and Herster built a grist mill on Bushkill Creek at H amilton Street, Easton, Pennsylvania about 1790. This grist mill in 194 6, was the property of Henry Barnett, who operated it as a grist mill. T he original tract contained 8 acres and 144 perches, "starting at a persim mon tree at the east side of the Delaware River".

John Brotzman and John Herster was sold a lot "out building" on Seip's ro ad by George William Raup, Borough of Easton, Pennsylvania will abstra ct book #3003 v4 page 490 year 1815.
John was administrator for Adam Yohe, his father-in-law.
Having acquired a fortune, John Brotzman bought on 10 May 1815 a Hot el of Bachman for $2400. Yet 16 August 1819, with debt of $13000, it was s old at a Sheriff Sale 20 August 1819 to the bank for $4645 and the ba nk in turn sold it Jacob Abel for $7540.
