John J. Unangst
John J Unangst, a widely known and highly esteemed resident, of Bethlehe m, died today at noon at the residence of his son, Addison Unangst, on Cen ter St., Nazareth. He had been ailing for some time with Bright's diseas e, and a few days ago his illness took a turn for the worse.

He was the son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Jacob Unangst was born in Lower Na zareth Township, this county, November 15, 1832. He was reared to manho od in Bethelhem Township, where his parents moved. His early education w as received in the schools of that township and later he attended VanDevee rs academy, this city. After leaving the academy he taught school until M ay 1854.

On January 15th, 1855, and he married Susan C., daughter of the late Pet er Seip, of Seipsville, Palmer township, and for fifteen years after th at time kept the hotel stand at Seips.

While a resident of Seips he took an active part in politics, been elect ed to places of honor in trust in the township. In 1965 he was nominat ed for the county treasurer on the Democratic ticket, and being elected se rved one term. In April, 1869, he removed with his family to Nazareth, a nd for several years acted as superintendent of the Nazareth Machine and A gricultural Implement Manufacturing company, after which he erected a lar ge plant on Belvidere St., where he carried on the same business until 18 79 when the works were completely destroyed by fire. This was a loss to h im of about $30,000 having had no insurance on the works.

He was a very shrewd and energetic businessman, mastering the agricultur al implementation business in a short time and carrying it to the successf ul ends.

His next venture was in the merchantile business and established the gener al store in Nazareth, he succeeded beyond even his own expectations.

Of late years she turned over the business to his son Edward. In 18 86 he removed to Bethlehem, but spent most of his time in Nazareth, looki ng after the interests of the business. He also started a furniture sto re which business his son Addison has been carrying on.

The deceased was a consistent member of the Lutheran church, and for a num ber of years took a very active interest in the Sunday school of St. John 's Church, Nazareth, and was a member of the board of trustees of the chur ch. At various times he served as school director and as burgess of Nazar eth, and for some years as director of the Northampton County National Ban k, this city. He was an affectionate husband, a kind and indulgent paren t, a good neighbor and the useful citizen.

A widow and seven children survive, three sons and four daughters, Euge ne P, of Bethlehem; Edward J. In Addison, of Nazareth; Mrs. Edna, wi fe of George D. Kressler, of West Bethlehem; Mrs. Lizzie Kern, of Bethleh em; Mrs. Jane P, wife of Walter S. Freeman, of Phillipsburg; and Mrs. Ma ry S., Wife of Albert E Duckham, of Pittsburgh, Pa.
