Jacob tried several occupations such as carpet weaving, canal boy, and car penter. He went to Minnesota in 1855(taking his sister Elizabeth and broth er Amos with him). He settled in Henderson, where he lived for 28 years, w orking as tinsmith making cooking utensils for new settlers and runni ng a Hardware store. He sold the business in 1882 to his brother Jonas a nd had a fortune worth near1y $500,000. He served the community as sheri ff and mayor. In 1875 he became a collector of customs, being appoint ed by President Grant. Later he was a State Senator. They went to Californ ia in 1883, where he dealt in real estate. There he was president of the C alifornia Bank of Los Angeles and served on the city council(4 years)
