Suicide in Phillipsburg
Oscar Sigafoos While Intoxicated Drank Carbolic Acid
Crazed by over-indulgence in bad whiskey, Oscar Sigafoos, of 28 Sitgreav es street, this place committed suicide on Friday by drinking carbolic aci d. He was found dead in the cellar of his home having died almost instantl y.

Sigafoos had been employed at the Alpha cement works for some time a nd at 2:20 o?clock Friday afternoon he left his home saying he was goi ng to work but soon returned with a pint bottle of whiskey which he dra nk in a few minutes. He then went out again and returned with a small bot tle of carbolic acid. On entering the house he went directly to the garre t, but soon came down stairs. He seated himself near his wife and lit h is pipe. Mrs. Sigafoos notice his strange actions and when she went to an other room her husband went down in the cellar, where he was afterwards fo und dead.

Mrs. Sigafoos had detected the oder of the acid and followed her husband i nto the cellar. She asked him what he was doing but he made no reply. Seei ng him crouching in the corner of the cellar she screamed for help and wh en several of the neighbors arrived, which was about 5 o?clock, he was dea d.

Coroner Hagery was called and after learning the circumstances, deem ed an inquest unnecessary.

It is evident that the large quantity of wichkey the man drank caused h im to become despondent and take his life. On several previous occasions S igafoos had threatened to take his life when under the influence of Liquor .

Sigafoos was 34 years of age and leaves a wife and four children ? Harol d, Farrand, Russell and Mabel; also one sister and three brothers. Miss Em ma, Asa, Daniel of this place, and William of Scranton.
