Woman Dies at 103; Won Degree at 79
Miss Amanda Hess, lifelong resident of Springtown, died Tuesday in Doylest own at the age of 103.

Born in Springtown on May 8, 1852, a daughter of the late David H. and Sar ah (Laubach) Hess, she was a former schoolteacher and instructed in many o ne room schools in the Springtown area before World War I.

After the war she recalled to active teaching. Deciding to complete her sc holastic training, she studied for three summer periods at Muhlenberg Coll ege and received a degree in arts and music in her 8th years.

In 1872 Miss Hess became the first organist in Christ community Church, Sp ringtown. She retained the post for 63 years and in 1947, on the 75th anni versary of the church, returned to play the organ while the choir sang ?Fa ith of our Fathers.?

Miss Hess was a Sunday School teacher for at least 73 years, and for mo re than 30 yers she taught music privately.

She had a vivid recollection of Civil War Times, During her lifetime, t he United States has had 21 presidents.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Stokes Hess, Riegelsville R. ! and several ni eces and nephews.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Brill Funeral Home., Springtow n.

John W. Hower
John W. Hower, 75, of Orefield R. 2, was dead arrival Friday at St. Luke ?s Hospital after being stricken at the home of his sister, Mrs. Rebecca K ressler, 1291 Pembroke Road, Bethlehem.

He was a husband of Arlene M. (Unangst) Kemmerer Hower and the late Mildr ed (Gangewere) Hower.

He was an electric furnace tender at the Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 30 yea rs before retiring in 1969.

Born in Friedensville, he was a son of the late Jacob and Louise (Jacob y) Hower.

He was a member of the Morganland United Church of Christ, Orefield.

Surviving with his widow and sister are three daughters, Mrs. Robert Shake spear of Boyertown R. 4, Rebecca, with the Air Force in San Antonio, Tex ., and Karen, at home; two sons, James, with the Army in El Paso, Tex., a nd Richard, at home, three stepdaughters, Mrs. Alice Keckner and Mrs. Erne st Bonser, both of Bethlehem, and Mrs. Joanne Wehr of Whitehall; two steps ons, Dale Kemmerer of Orefield R. 2, and Terry Kemmerer of New Tripo li R. 2; another sisters, Mrs. Ella Miller of Bethlehem and 10 grandchildr en.

Service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Wallace M. Long Funeral Home, 5 00 Linden St., Bethlehem. Calling hours will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday.
