Joseph B. Garis, 78, Retired T-W Employee
Joseph B. Garis, 78, of 2140 Freemansburg avenue, an employe of Taylor-Wha rton Iron and Steel Company for 65 years before he was pensioned last Janu ary, died yesterday at 7:45 in Easton Hospital.
Mr. Garis was chief inspector in the pattern deparment of the steel compa ny at the time of his retirement. He had been in failing health since la st October, and entered the hospital on June 27.
He began his long career in the steel industry as a boy of 13 by taki ng a job at the old William Wharton Jr. and Company in Philadelphia. In 1 912 the Taylor Iron and Steel Compny absorbed the Wharton firm, and thr ee years later mr. Gairs came here to work at the newly build plant.
Born near Jenkintown, Mr. Garis was the son of the Mahlon and Sarah Beidel man Garis. He resided in Palmer Township for many years, moving to Wils on about two years ago to reside with his daughter. Mrs. Blanche Vough t, of the Freemandburg avenue address. His wife, Anna Schultz Garis, di ed about four years ago.
Surviving, in addition to the daughter with who he resided are a son, Har ry C. Garis, of Broadheadsville; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchi ldren; a brother Edward and a sister Mrs. Carrie Rothrock, both of Philade lphia. |
