Stewart L. Purdy, Retired Policeman, Dies
Stewart L. Purdy, the first policeman to be retired under the rules of t he police pension fund, died at the home of his step-daughter, Mrs. An na M. Eilenberger, 2009 Washington Street, Wilson, at 12:05 this afterno on after a short illness. He was stricken after a party in honor of his se ventieth birthday anniversary on November 15. Heart trouble was given as t he cause of his death.

He was appointed to the force on May 1, 1899 and was retired January 5, 19 25. Until about a year ago. Mr. Purdy remained in excellent health and wor ked at the Kleinhans greenhouses but for the past 12 months had done nothi ng, dividing it?s time between the home of his laughter and an adopted so n, Ira. Purdy, 129 Wilkes-Barre street. Besides these two he is surviv ed by a step-son, S. Clarence McLaughlin, Youngstown, Ohio, and two brothe rs, George, of Easton, and Edward, of Catasauqua.

He was a member of Washington Lodge, No. 17, Fraternal Order of Police a nd St. John?s Lutheran Church.

He was born in Easton and before his appointment to the police force was e mployed in the machine shops at the Lehigh Valley railroad.

He was also an ardent hunter and fisherman.

Besides his mother, he is survived by a son Donald, of Nazareth; a daught er Nancy Standard, of Bushkill Township, Pa. and three grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Schmidt Mortuar y, Nazareth. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Hecktown, Pa.

Funeral of S. L. Purdy
The funeral of Stewart L. Purdy, who was for 26 years a patrolman on the E aston police force, was held at 3:30 this afternoon from the home of his d aughter, Mrs. Jacob Eilenberger, 2009 Washington boulevard. Rev. Dr. Fran klin K. Fretz, pastor of St. John?s Lutheran church, Easton, conducted t he services and interment was made in the Easton Heights cemetery. A del egation was present, from Washington Lodge, No. 18 Fraternal Order of Poli ce, and the pallbearers were members of the Easton Police force.
