Raymond Purdy, Former Athlete, Dies at Age 57
Starred At Football And Baseball; Was Long A Carpenter
Raymond R. Purdy, 57 years old, a well known carpenter and football and ba seball star of former years, died this morning at 10 o?clock at his hom e, 1220 Spruce Street, after an illness of three months.

He was born in Easton, July 25, 1885, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Geor ge Purdy and lived in Easton all his life. He was a member of the cla ss of 1904, Easton High School, and played on the famous 1903 football te am captained by C. Raymond Ellicott. This team won nine games, scoring 2 79 points to opponents? nothing. In 1904 he caught for the Easton High Sch ool baseball team. He also played with the Superba football team.

After leaving high school he played with a number of amateur baseball tea ms in this section, including Ingersoll-Rand, Eureka, Souderton, the old E ast Ends of Bethlehem, with ?Tad? Jones of this city, as his pitcher; West ons, of Easton, as coach and player and the Phillipsburg league tea m. He was familiarly known as ?Duckel? Purdy and was popular with fans wh erever he played.

His wife, Mrs. Nina Purdy, survives, with three children; Mrs. Randolph Ha ckman, George Purdy, Easton; Russell Purdy, of Camden, N.J.; two sister s, Miss Annie Purdy, of 1342 Spruce Street; Mrs. Bert Dyer, Martin?s Cree k; two grandchildren, Lettie Ann Hackman and Diane Purdy, both of Easton.

As a carpenter, he worked for several contracting firms here and was a mem ber of Easton Local, Carpenters and Joiners Union. He was also a memb er of Vanderveer Lodge, No. 1105, I. O. O. F. and the Moravian Church, th is city.

Mr. Purdy won fame at the time the big stack of C. K. Williams? mill, Nor th Thirteenth street, was erected. He caught four out of sixteen balls th rown from the top of the stack.

Funeral of Raymond R. Purdy
The funeral of Raymond R. Purdy, of 1130 Spruce Street, well known carpent er and former baseball and football star, was held this afternoon at 3: 30 at the Heck Memorial Home, Thirteenth and Bushkill streets. The Rev. H ugh E. Kemper, pastor of the First Moravian Church, conducted the servic es and interment was in Easton Heights cemetery. The pallbearers were Geo rge Grollman, Russell Duncan, Charles Brinker, Milford Carey, William Bu ss and Grover Odenwelder.
