Clarence W. Hottel Sr., 96, founded heating company

Clarence W. Hottel Sr., who founded a Baltimore air conditioning and heati ng firm, died of a hemorrhage Tuesday at Sinai Hospital. The former Idlewy lde resident was 96.

Mr. Hottel was born in Bethlehem, Pa., the son of an itinerant Mennonite m inister, and was raised in eastern Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Beth lehem public schools.

He was married in 1938 to the former Dorothy L. Glimpse, and in 1945 the c ouple moved to Baltimore and established Fidelity Engineering Corp., an ai r-conditioning and heating firm.

"They started the business on the dining room table of their Northwood hom e," said his daughter, Anne Hottell Turnbull of Sparks.

At the time of his 1990 retirement and sale of the business, he was chairm an of Fidelity's board. Mrs. Hottel died in 1982.

A Cross Keys resident since 1989, he was a longtime member of Hunt Vall ey Church and a founder of the Baltimore Breakfast Prayer Group that has m et continually since 1953. He also enjoyed reading and travel.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Valley Presbyterian Church, 22 00 W. Joppa Road in Lutherville.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Hottel is survived by two sons, Claren ce W. Hottel Jr. of Phoenix, Baltimore County, and James R. Hottel of Colu mbia; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Another son, Jo hn D. Hottel, died in 1944.
