A. E. Heckman Dies, Miller for 60 Years
Alvin E. Heckman, who operated one of the last remaining water-powered flour and feed mills and was a miller in the New Tripoli area for over 60 years, collapsed at Penn and Hamilton Sts., Allentown, yesterday and was dead on arrival at Sacred Heart Hospital.
The 78-year-old New Tripoli R. 1 miller owned and operated the Ulrich Mill on the Ontelaunee Creek between Lynnport and New Tripoli. He acquired it in 1936. It was operated partly by water power, partly by gas engine.
Police took Heckman to the hospital in their ambulance. He collapsed about 2:20 p.m.
Heckman was born April 22, 1879 in Walnutport, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Heckman. His father operated a mill in the Cherryville area. His two late brother, William Jr. and Wilson, were both millers.
Heckman grew up in the mill and the milling business. In his early youth, he tried other pursuits briefly. He operated the Little Gap Hotel, then bought the Parryville Hotel from Wilson F. Shankweiler. From there he went to Guthsville where he introduced waffle dinners.
From there he came to Ulrich's Mill on Ontelaunee.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ester Anthony of Walnutport, and two daughters, Mrs. Irene Herring, Levittown, and Winnie, wife of Robert Trainer.
Arrangments are being completed by the Keller Funeral Home, New Tripoli. |
