A Chapter From Real Life
Amos Brauss, who died at the Berks Almshouse last week, was the owner of one of the finest farms in Weisenburg Township, Lehigh County, 10 years ago. The farm contains several valuable ore beds. He finally became financially embarrassed, was compeled to make an assignment, became heart broken by his misfortune and finally drifted into the poor house.

The Allentown Democrat, Allentown, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, April 07, 1880, page 2
Moved to Reading Mr. Amos Brauss, of Upper Macungie, along with his eldest son, Jeremiah recently removed to Reading, where they took a residence at 619 North Tenth Street. Mr. Brauss, Sr., for many years was one of the most substantial farmers in Upper Macungie, but through bail-goin and bearings upon him of the panic he had his all swept from him, and is comparatively poor. Jerry, after the failure of the father, took the farm, but being compelled to vacate for the purchaser of the property he recently sold out his farm stock and accomplanied the remainder of thefamily to Reading, where he has some notion of starting in the coal business.
