Death Claims A. J. Odenwelder
Prominent Easton Business Man Had Been Ill A Long Time
Asher J. Odenwelder died at 6:40 o?clock this morning at his home, 45 Sou th Fourth street, after a lingering illness and Easton thereby lost o ne of its most highly esteemed citizens and prominent business men, a m an who had throughout his entire life set an example for exemplary livin g, civic interest and pride and conservative commercial and financial mana gement, a course which brought him great success in life?s affairs and w on for him the lasting confidence and the loyal friendship of a very lar ge portion of the community.

Mr. Odenwelder was in his 89th year and his entire life was spent her e. He was a son of the long deceased Jacob B and Mary Ann Gradwahl Odenwel der and was born in the family home, a stone house in Odenweldertown, (n ow West Easton) which is now used by the Chipman Hosiery Company as a scho ol for its employees. He was the last survivor of his father?s family.

Mr. Odenwelder married Louise Groetzinger, daughter of the late Adolph a nd Matilda Groetzinger whose home was on South Fourth Street, adjoin wh at in which Mr. Odenwelder had been living for a number of years pas t. He is survived by his widow and four children Matilda, wife of Theodo re E. Daub, Asher J. Odenwelder, Jr., Louis Odenwelder, and Willard Odenwe lder, all of this city. There are two grandchildren, William J. Daub and E lsie Louise Daub. These children are descendants on both paternal and mate rnal sides from family which for nearly two hundred years have been identi fied with the affairs of the forks of the Delaware.

Asher J. Odenwelder obtained his education in the Palmer Township schoo ls and in the Easton High School. Then he took a course in Philadelphia Sc hool of Pharmacy. He returned to Easton a registered pharmacist, and in 18 71 purchased the drug store of J. F. Thompson & So, which was located in t he Jacob Fraley building on Northampton Street, opposite the Able Opera Ho use. Mr. Odenwelder conducted a wholesale and retail drug business ther e, then at Fourth and Northampton streets, where the Northampton Nation al Bank building now stands and later at 404 and 406 Northampton Stree t, a period of 54 years. On May 10, 1925, he disposed of his business to t he Louis K. Liggett Company, retiring from active life.

During this period of more than half a century Mr. Odenwelder built up f or himself a name for efficiency, courtesy, reliability in business affai rs that might well be envied by all. Of a genial and cordial nature, maki ng friends easily and hold them by reason of his characteristic qualitie s, successful in financial transactions, possessed of judgment and informa tion which had made him one of the most valued members of the directorsh ip of the Easton National bank. Mr. Odenwelder may well be referr ed to as a typical Eastonian, whose loss the community will deeply deplor e. Besides being a bank director he was a director of the Lehigh Water Com pany and the Easton Cemetery Company.

In politics a staunch Republican, he never sought public office, but was r epeatedly consulted by leaders of that party in this section. For sever al years he was a member of the board of health. In civic affairs he was n ot only interested, but a liberal contributor, and no movement of this ki nd nor a Federal Loan campaign during the World war was undertaken here wh ich did not have his support in a substantial way. He was one of the valu ed members of the Easton Board of Trade and was a consistory emeritus memb er of the first Reformed church, having been an active member may years be fore receiving his latter distinction. Since its organization, the First R eformed church has had Odenwelers enrolled in its membership, and Asher Od enwelder well upheld the family tradition in religious matters.
