Killed By Cars

Thomas Coleman, a well known resident of this city and a member of the bla cksmith firm of Kessler &
Coleman, was struck by a westbound Lake Erie & Western freight at the cros sing on Rawson Avenue, Monday morning at 6:15 o'clock, and received injuri es which proved fatal. Coleman resided at 541 Rawson Avenue, north of t he railroad and was on his way to work at the time of the accident. He w as walking along the east side of the street and failing to notice the app roach of the train as he was very deaf, he stepped on the track just in fr ont of the engine and was struck by the pilot, carried across the street a nd thrown into a ditch on the south side of the track.

The engineer states that he saw Coleman approach, but supposed that he wou ld see the train and stop in time as the train was only running about eig ht miles an hour. When he saw that Coleman paid no attention to the whist le or train he reversed the engine but it was too late and Coleman was str uck as before stated.

Coleman was immediately taken to his home in an unconscious condition a nd Dr. Stamm hastily summoned. Examination showed that his skull had be en badly fractured and his right leg broken above
the ankle. He lingered unconscious for an hour and died. His wife who h ad but recently recovered from a long and severe illness is prostrated ov er her great bereavement, and three children, the oldest about twelve, a re left fatherless.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist church conduct ed by Rev. J.L. Albritton. Interment at Oakwood.
