Jonas was confirmed at "Lohr Sacconheim" on Pentecost, 1757, accordi ng to the
records of Tohickon Union Church.
Jonas rose to political prominence in Northampton County, first as a memb er of
the Committee of Correspondence in 1776. He was elected sheriff in 1779, a nd to
the Assembly in 1781-2-3. In 1789 he was elected to the Supreme Executive
Council, was again sheriff in 1790, and served as a justice of the peace i n
Northampton County.
Jonas was married three times: first to Catharina Santee/Sendi, secondly t o
Margaret Grube, and thirdly to Susanna (maiden name unknown), who surviv ed him.
The funeral notice of Rev. Thomas Pomp of Jonas' first wife, Catharina, sa id
that they were married for 40 years and had eight children; two sons and s ix
daughters, one of whom predeceased her.
Jonas left a will, written 29 September 1820 and proved 10 June 1824, in w hich
he named his present wife, Susanna, and six children: daughter Elizabeth w ife
of Jacob Kreidler; eldest son Isaac; son Jonas, dec'd.; eldest daughter Re gina,
dec'd., wife of Philip Knecht; daughter Molly, wife of John Knecht; daught er
Peggy, wife of George Kreidler, and his own brother, John Hertzel.

Jonas and his second wife, Margaret, are buried in St. Peter's Church ceme tery
in Plainfield Twp., Northampton Co., PA.
