In 1785 John had 160 acres in Bethlehem Twp. on the east side of the Bethl ehem
to Nazareth Road. His farm was opposite the farm of the Santees. The ar ea in
which he lived became part of Nazareth Twp., when that township was form ed from
Bethlehem Twp. in 1787, and then became part of Lower Nazareth Twp., when
Nazareth Twp. was split into Upper and Lower Nazareth Townships in 1807.
In 1800 John and his family were living in Nazareth Twp. In his househo ld were
two males less than 10 years of age (sons Jonas and George), two males age
10-16 (sons Jacob and John Jr.), one male age 26-45 (John Sr. age 38), one
female less than 10 years old (daughter Maria), one female age 10-16 (daug hter
Elizabeth), one female age 26-45 (wife Catharine), and one female over t he age
of 45 (unidentified). (1800 census, Northampton Co., PA, Nazareth Twp.)
On 28 July 1802 John Hartzell, yeoman, Nazareth Twp. purchased a tra ct of land
of 197 acres and 137 perches in Nazareth Twp. from the Penns. The land w as lot
#22 of tract A and B in Nazareth Twp. (Northampton County deed book E-3, p g.
399)
On 22 April 1812, John Hartzell Esq. of Lower Nazareth Twp., purchased a t ract
of 58 acres and 30 perches in Lower Nazareth Twp. from Leonard Santee and
George Santee for $3,316. 87. (Northampton County deed book A-4, pg. 412)
On 22 March 1816, John also purchased a 22 acre tract of timber land in
Bushkill Twp., Northampton Co., PA from George Zearfoss and his wife.
In April of 1823, John Hartzell was one of the administrators of the esta te of
Ludwig Handshaw (Hanshoe/Henshue). (Northampton County deed book G-4, p g. 463)
In March of 1845, about one month before he wrote his will, John Hartzel
conveyed portions of his land to several of his children for relatively lo w
selling prices. He then specified in his will that the children were to p ay his
estate the agreed upon prices for this land. The land deeds were:
- 10 March 1845: John Hartzell Esq., Lower Nazareth Twp., conveyed two tra cts
of 1) 76 acres and 114 perches and 2) 25 acres and 25 perches in Lower Naz areth
Twp. to Isaac Hartzell for $612.12. Both of these tracts were part of t he 197
acre and 137 perches tract purchased by John Hartzell from the Penns in 18 02.

- 10 March 1845: John Hartzell Esq., Lower Nazareth Twp., conveyed an
additional tracr of 19 acres and 9 perches of timber land in Bushkill Tw p. to
Isaac Hartzell for $381.12 1/2. The tract was part of a 22 acre tract purc hased
by John Hartzell from George Zearfoss and his wife on 27 March 1816.

- 10 March 1845: John Hartzell Esq., Lower Nazareth Twp., conveyed 3 acres
and 25 perches in Lower Nazareth Twp. of the original land purchased fr om the
Penns in 1802 plus 2 acres and 51 perches in Bushkill Twp. of the land th at had
been purchased from George Zearfoss in 1816, for a total sum of $248.25.

- 10 March 1845: John Hartyzell Esq., Lower Nazareth Twp., yeoman, conveye d
two tracts of 1) two acres and 41 perches and 2) two acres in Lower Nazare th
Twp. to Maria Hartzell (his spinster daughter) for $300. The tracts were p art
of the original purchased from the Penns in 1802. (Northampton County de ed book
G-7, pg. 502.
John is buried in the old cemetery at Dryland Union Church.
John left a will, written 12 April 1845 and proved 1 April 1847. He bequea thed
his plantation in Lower Nazareth Twp. to son Isaac and directed that Isa ac was
to pay his estate $60 per acre in the amount of $200 per year. He also
bequeathed a tract of land to daughter Polly (Mary) for $300. The will als o
refers to his daughter Sarah, wife of George Rishel; sons Jacob, Jonas and
George; daughter Catharine (wife of Christian George), who had died befo re the
will was drawn; Susanna Hartzell, wife of my son George; and to the hei rs of
his deceased son John, who were to receive $700. A codicil was added to th e
will on 11 November 1845. The executors of John's estate were son Isaac
Hartzell and son-in-law Christian George.

On 3 April 1848 a release was issued indicating that Isaac Hartzell had pa id
