Twice-Retired Mack Employe Dies; Was 88

Francis F. Smith, who retired from "Mack's" seven years ago at 81, didn't like it, and went back to work for two more years before retiring "once and for all," died yesterday afternoon after collapsing at Silk and Allen streets shortly after 1:30 p.m.

Smith, an Allentown resident for 62 years and widely known in the city, was pronounced dead on arrival at Sacred Heart Hospital where he was taken in the police ambulance by Officers John Deily and James Beltz. Smith's home was at 726 Washington St.

A son of the late Charles and Catherine Smith, he was born at Smith, Gap, Monroe County, June 25, 1866. He was 88.

In all. Smith worked 31 years at the Mack plant. Coming to Allentown in 1892 from Northampton County, where he had taught school, he operated a grocery store at 7th and Liberty streets for many years before going to work at the Mack plant.

Eight years ago he retired from the Mack Corp. but went back to work, announcing he did not care for the "'inactive lite."

On his 83rd birthday anniversary he retired for the sec-or ; time, "once and for all."

An active member of Dubbs Memorial Reformed Church, Allentown, he was a Sunday School teacher for 25 of his 42 years there. He was also a member of the Golden Age Club of the Salvation Army.

He was the husband of Ella Rebecca 'Frankenfield) Smith, who died in 1939.

Surviving are sons Robert .J.. Fairlawn, N. J.; Charles F., Allentown: George W., Allentown: Elmer W., Bethlehem: Harry R , Allentown; two daughters. Bertha, wife of Trustin Hughes, Lancaster: and Elibabeth. wife of Ellwood Dotter, Allentown: one sister, Mrs. Cora Bender, Northampton: 17 grandchildren: 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary, a son. Stanley, and a sister. Mrs. Alice Wagner.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the J. S. Burk. holder funerai home, 1601 Hamilton St., Al'entown
