Sudden Death of Francis G. Hess
The sudden death of Francis G. Hess, a highly respected citizen of the Thi rd Ward, occurred at 5 o?clock this morning, of heart disease, at the resi dence of Union Street. Mr. Hess was a strong constitution, and neither h is family nor his associates thought for an instant that he was afflict ed with heart disease, for he never complained and was always hale and hea rty. On last Monday, after having finished his day?s labor, excavati ng at Tinsley Jeter?s new property, corner of Main and Market street s, he was taken ill and reached home after considerable difficulty abo ut 8 o?clock in the evening.l The day following he resumed work, apparent ly recovered from his illness. Yesterday he again worked at Mr. Jeter?s n ew building and his fellow laborers noticed nothing unusual in his manne r. He went home for supper and was pleasant and cheerful. About 8 ?cloc k, the customary time for his retiring for the night, he bede his wife a nd children goo night, and retired. Shortly before 5 o?clock this morni ng his wife, upon awaking noticed her husband sitting up in bed. He call ed medicine. She immediately ran down stairs, and upon returning found h im lying on the bed breathing his last. The children were summoned to h is bedside, and neighbors quickly ran for a physician. Before the latter a rrived Mr. Hess had died. Dr. L.H. Lawall stated that death was caus ed by heart disease. The deceased was about 50 years old, and was well kn own in the community. He served in the late rebellion, as first sergea nt of Co. A., 174 th Regt. Pa. Vols. Besides a host of friends, his wife a nd two grown-up sons, George and Allen Hess, mourn his demise. Two brothe rs, Owen Hess of Lower Saucon and Co. Ed. E. Hess of Hellertown, and a sis ter, Miss Sarah A. Hess, and step-sisters, Mrs. Sink of Springtown, Mrs. H arry Durns of South Bethlehem, Mrs. Ella Cawley of Springtown and Mrs. Ant hony Rice of New Jersey, survive him.
