FRANK J. STEINMETZ IS KILLED HUNTING
Fence Discharges Gun--Note Written in Last Moments to Reassure Family

FRIENDS LAUD CHARACTER
Final Message, Giving Assurance That Death Was Due to Accident, Pointed To as Trait of Always Thinking of Others.

After being fatally wounded and evidently fearing that he could not possibly live to reach the house, Frank J. Steinmetz, one of the best known realty dealers in Portland, snatched from his coat pocket a piece of brown wrapping paper and with a lead pencil wrote a note, saying, "I shot myself--accidentally."

He was hunting on the Pressly Gillihan ranch on Sauvies Island and evidently met with the misfortune Saturday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock while trying to pull his gun through a woven wire fence.

Consideration for Others Noted.
The marked trait of the man, who all through his life had been exceptionally careful not to give pain to others, manifested itself in his last moments, for he evidently was so anxious that his family and friends should know that no one was to blame that he wrote the words "accidental" and "accident" three times, but it was so dim that not until it was put under the microscope by Deputy Coroner Smith was it distinguishable.

Pennsylvania Is Birthplace.
Mr. Steinmetz was born in Pennsylvania December 12, 1859. He lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., for 20 years, serving as County Treasurer and as a United States forester. He came to Portland in 1904 and had lived here continuously ever since, being engaged in the realty business.

He is survived by his widow, his father, three brothers and three sisters. None but the widow live here. He was a member of the Portland Realty Board, the Elks, the Odd-fellows and the Knights of Pythias and was member of the Taylor-street Methodist Episcopal Church for years.
